Automatic External Defibrillator - AED Most of us are familiar with the links in the "Chain of Survival" for the victim of a cardiac arrest. These are: - EARLY ACCESS
- EARLY CPR
- EARLY DEFIBRILLATION
- EARLY ALS (Advanced Life Support)
A new technology has been introduced that will greatly affect this Chain of Survival. This is the automated external defibrillator (AED). The American Heart Association says, "Early defibrillation is the link in the Chain of Survival most likely to improve survival. Research has confirmed that automated external defibrillators can be used effectively by minimally trained emergency personnel, by lay or community responders, and by the family or associates of people at high risk of sudden cardiac death. The placement of AED's in the hands of large numbers of people trained in their use proves to be the key intervention for increasing the chances of survival for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients." In response to this new technology, EMP has just finished the development of a video-based, hands-on course to teach the operation of all types of AED's. EMP has 4 AED programmes to choose from depending on which defibrillator you wish to be trained on. This course attracts LSC funding.
